With the cold drop in temperatures, finally the Basil plants at Paradise have given up the ghost – yet how bountifully they grew this year!

Oncimum basilicum is native to India, naturalised in the Mediterranean and from there travelled to Europe, America and Australia – and beyond. Beset with history, myths, and therapeutic uses (namely to energize and fortify), it is a fragrant herb associated with tomatoes. We grow Basil as a companion plant near tomatoes to distract flying insects, but also because there is nothing nicer than a freshly picked tomato wrapped in basil leaves on a hot day…

Basil does not like wet feet, and benefits from regular picking to avoid it setting flowers and becoming woody. Thanks to the deep heat of this past Summer and our rich, moisture retentive no-dig soil, our basil thrived in and out of the polytunels and provided an abundant supply to the local organisations we support such as pizzeria extraordinaire @wellkneaded and the creative chefs at @homecafé.

This week is National Tree Week and we have been busy planting saplings with our youngest visitors. This Hazel, donated by @woodlandtrust is being carefully planted by a group of children from @swaffieldprimaryschool. Since Paradise was founded in 2014 we have planted over 500 trees on our one acre site - a huge boost for biodiversity in #earlsfield! 🌲🌳
